Proportions8:11 (rectangular national flag)
History
After 1814, demand grew for a distinct Norwegian merchant flag. The Storting adopted Fredrik Meltzer’s design on 4 May 1821. The dispute over the union badge was settled by the 1898 Flag Act, which removed the badge from the flag.
Design
Meltzer used the Nordic cross form and chose red, white and blue, describing them as the colours of liberty.
