History
A red-white-red Latvian banner was recorded in the 13th-century Livonian Rhymed Chronicle. In 1917, the colours were used at events intended to unite Latvia’s regions, and artist Ansis Cīrulis’ sketch became the most popular. The Constitutional Assembly adopted the law on the flag and coat of arms on 15 June 1921, and the distinctive carmine shade was specified in 1922. The flag was banned after the 1940 occupation and regained its status as the national flag on 27 February 1990.
Design
The flag is carmine with a narrower white horizontal band. The red, white, and red bands have the ratio 2:1:2.
