History

Matthías Þórðarson presented the tricolour cross flag in 1906. The design was approved by royal decree on 19 June 1915 and became Iceland’s national flag when the country became sovereign on 1 December 1918. The republic retained the design in the Flag Act signed on 17 June 1944.

Design

The blue field carries a white Nordic cross with a red cross inside it. Matthías Þórðarson intended blue to represent the mountains, white the ice, and red the fire.
