History
Artist Thue Christiansen designed Erfalasorput. The flag was recognized by law on 6 June 1985, and Greenland’s parliament adopted its own Flag Act on 11 June. It was officially raised for the first time on National Day, 21 June that year.
Design
In Christiansen’s interpretation, the large white field represents the ice sheet and the red half of the disc the fjords. The white half represents icebergs and pack ice, while the large red field represents the sea.
