History
Faroese students in Copenhagen created Merkið. It was first raised in Fámjin on 22 June 1919 and recognized by British authorities as the ensign for Faroese vessels on 25 April 1940. The Home Rule Act recognized the special Faroese flag on land and at sea in 1948.
Design
Merkið has a red Nordic cross edged in blue on a white field. White represents Christianity and, according to its creators, also the foam of the sea and the clear Faroese sky; blue and red express the islands’ bonds with the other Nordic countries.
