History
The blue-black-white flag was consecrated at Otepää on 4 June 1884 as the flag of the Estonian Students’ Society and grew into a national symbol. The Provisional Government proclaimed it the state flag on 21 November 1918, and the State Flag Act was adopted on 27 June 1922. The flag was banned after the Soviet annexation in June 1940. It returned openly during the Singing Revolution, was raised on the Pikk Hermann tower on 24 February 1989, and was re-adopted as the state flag on 7 August 1990.
Design
The flag consists of three equal horizontal bands: blue at the top, black in the middle, and white at the bottom.
