History
The revised Autonomy Act, which entered into force in 1952, gave Åland the right to its own flag. After a long process involving several proposals, the parliament selected the present cross flag on 9 December 1953, and Åland received its own flag in 1954. The current provincial Act (1992:41) defines the flag as a symbol of Åland’s autonomy and fixes its construction.
Design
A golden-yellow Nordic cross lies on a medium-blue field, with a narrower red cross at its centre. The flag is 17 units high and 26 units long.
